Protea Pendant with Chiapas Amber

This Protea Pendant weaves together different elements to produce a natural piece of Earthen jewellery.   Hand crafted by us, this necklace features a piece of Chiapas Amber in it's centre.  Chiapas Amber is hand fossicked by the Zapatistas, a revolutionary group based in Chiapas, Mexico.  The Zapatistas promote land reform, Indigenous autonomy, democracy and social justice, and this amber holds symbolic significance to their resistance against oppression.  Amber is thought to have healing and protective qualities, which also emphasises the Zapatistas cultural movement of preserving culture, land, and way of life.  

Amber itself is a fossilised resin, known for its warm golden colour and ability to preserve ancient plant and animal matter. Unlike most Baltic amber, Chiapas Amber is natural and not treated. Amber is also quite phenomenal as it has the ability to gain static electric charge.  Indeed, testament to this ancient phenomenon is the origin of the word 'electricity', which originates from the Greek word 'elektron' - meaning amber.  

Each Protea used in our jewellery has been ethically and sustainably harvested in the Huon Valley, Tasmania. They are sanded by hand to reveal the amazing patterns and Nature Matrix beneath, then naturally cured and polished with 100% organic linseed oil and Australian beeswax. Even after this curing process our pendants still retain their signature subtle spicy fragrance.  Pendants are attached to an adjustable leather cord and come with a cotton bag for safe keeping.

*Care Instructions*

As these pendants are made from natural seedpods, they will gradually begin to deteriorate over time if exposed to soaps, beauty/body products and excess water. If this exposure does occur, simply re-coat the pieces with linseed oil or beeswax to help maintain the health and look of the protea hearts.
